Elk Point at a Glance
Located in the rolling hills of Alberta's
heartland, the town of Elk
Point is situated on the North Saskatchewan River east of Edmonton
and is considered the gateway to the province's Lakeland region. The community
has a rich multicultural heritage dating back to fur trading settlements of
the late 1700s, evidenced by the town's 9.8-metre (32-foot) tall wooden statue
of explorer and surveyor Peter
Fidler and a large historical
mural that showcases the area's history. At the nearby twin forts of Fort
George and Buckingham
House, an interpretive
centre offers visitors guided tours of the historical site and insight into
the thriving fur trade that once existed in the region. Today, Elk
Point has swapped the Hudson Bay and Northwest Trading companies for agriculture
and oilpatch industries and serves as a supply centre for related businesses.
Life is not all work and no play, however, for today's residents and visitors.
The town celebrates its western culture with an annual, two-day stampede
every July, while the nearby Lakeland
region and Iron
Horse Trail attract an array of lake enthusiasts, hikers, campers and snowmobilers
to the area.
