Church Capital of North America Lamont County, located 32 km northeast of Edmonton, has declared itself the "Church Capital of North America" on a per capita basis. There are 47 churches located in the county and a total population of 8,200. Lamont County is home to late 19th century Ukrainian immigration to Canada; many of the churches are constructed in the Byzantine style and are Ukrainian Catholic or Ukrainian Orthodox. Also there are several Roman Catholic, United, Alliance, Lutheran and Moravian churches in the County. A booklet containing self-guided driving tours of all Lamont churches is available. The booklet features a picture of each church, a short history and travel directions. Also available is a poster featuring a picture of each church.
