Sundre at a Glance
Rooted in the rolling foothills of the Rocky Mountains, along the banks of the
Red
Deer River in west-central Alberta,
the town of Sundre
is situated 130 km (81 mi) north of Calgary
and 100 km (62 mi) south of Red Deer.
The original settlement occurred late in the 19th century but it wasn't until
1907 that the town's first postmaster named Sundre after his Norwegian hometown,
Sondre, meaning South. Sundre became a village in 1950, and then a town in 1956.
Its main economic contributors are the agriculture, lumber and petroleum industries
of the area but because of its scenic location near the Waterton
Lakes National Park, Sundre is also involved in the tourism and adventure-tourism
trade. The town itself draws in tourists with annual events such as the Sundre
Pro Rodeo, held in the third week of June, and the Sundre Parade, held in conjunction
with this event. This peaceful little prairie community actively encourages and
employs conservation practices in hopes to preserve the area's natural beauty
for generations to come.
